How do you send an entire city into October?

Junior Caminero answered with one swing.

Caminero hit a two-run walk-off home run in the ninth inning Friday night, lifting the Tampa Bay Rays to a 3–1 win over the Houston Astros at Tropicana Field. The victory made Tampa Bay the first Major League Baseball team to clinch a spot in the 2026 postseason.

The home run was Caminero’s 40th of the season. It traveled 417 feet into the left-field seats after Jonathan Aranda opened the inning with a double.

A Return to October

The Rays improved to 88–59 and secured their first playoff appearance since 2023. This will be the 10th postseason appearance in franchise history.

The moment carried additional weight because it happened at Tropicana Field. The Rays spent last season playing at George M. Steinbrenner Field after Hurricane Milton damaged the Trop, making the celebration feel like a homecoming for both the team and Tampa Bay.

Victor Mesa Jr. also helped create the moment by hitting a game-tying home run in the fifth inning. Starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen held Houston to one run across seven innings.

The Division Race Is Not Over

Clinching a playoff spot does not mean the Rays’ regular-season work is finished.

Tampa Bay holds a three-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East with 15 games remaining. The Rays are still fighting for their first division title since 2021 and a top seed in the American League postseason.

The team has spent 116 days leading the AL East and has held the American League’s best record for a franchise-record 115 days.

For now, one thing is official: October baseball is returning to Tampa Bay.
